Step-by-Step Guide: How to Seal Cracks & Gaps Between Your Counter Top

It’s very important to make sure you seal any cracks and gaps between your counter top and backsplash.  This keeps damaging water out and helps to prevent mold and damage to your cabinets and home. The job is easy and anyone can do it. All you’ll need it a tube of silicone, a caulking gun and some masking or painters tape. Make sure to use only high quality products such as GE Silicone 2, which comes in several colors and clear. To accomplish this job follow these steps below.

Step 1:  Make sure all surfaces are cleaned thoroughly and old caulk is removed.  This may require a little scraping.  Allow for the area to dry before reapplying new caulk.

Step 2:  Apply tape on the counter and on the tile just above and below the void. Make sure your tapelines are nice and straight. This helps to make a nice smooth bead and fills the gap evenly.

Step 3:  Cut the application end of your tube of GE Silicone 2 Caulk. Make sure you cut the tube far enough down the applicator tip so that the bead of caulk is wide enough to fill the entire void.

Step 4:  Insert the tube of GE Silicone 2 into your caulking gun.

Step 5:  Apply the caulk in one slow and continuous motion down the entire seam. Make sure you area using enough silicone and the gap is completely filled with product.

Step 6: Using a wet finger wipe the bead of wet silicone in one continuous motion. You may be required to stop and wipe your finger if too much product builds up. This removes excess product makes for a nice finished look.

Step 7:  Check over your job making sure you have adequately filled the gap. If so, carefully remove the tape and allow for the caulk to completely dry before exposing to any liquids.
