May: National BBQ Month! Get Your Deck Ready

May is National BBQ Month, so it’s no surprise that we want to highlight where you will be spending most of your time grilling-  outside on the deck!

With Memorial Day weekend ahead, the summer heat will be here in a blink and you’ll be finding yourself enjoying more time outdoors. Whether with your family or inviting a few friends over you’ll want to be sure your deck is in tip top shape.

An unwashed deck is an invitation to mold and mildew, which can cause rot and choose the appropriate deck cleaner. Prior be sure to sweep and remove all debris- you can do so using a putty knife.

If you are dealing with a new deck you may want to consider using a stain if you want to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Weathered wood doesn’t tend to benefit as much from staining so a fresh coat of paint will do the trick.

When the weather is warm and dry, it’s a good time to give your deck’s structure a close inspection. Pay particular attention to any areas within 6 inches of the ground or close to sources of water, such as downspouts and planters.

Check the railing. Give it a good shake to be sure posts are not loose or damaged-  loose connections may be remedied by drilling pilot holes and adding galvanized lag screws. Look for cracks that, overtime, may have developed around fasteners such as nails or screws.
